-- quotes on friendship and comfort

I saw these and thought they were beautiful:

Oh, the comfort - the inexpressible comfort of feeling safe with a person - having neither to weigh thoughts nor measure words, but pouring them all right out, just as they are, chaff and grain together; certain that a faithful hand will take and sift them, keep what is worth keeping, and then with the breath of kindness blow the rest away. ~Dinah Craik, A Life for a Life, 1859

If you were going to die soon and had only one phone call you could make, who would you call and what would you say? And why are you waiting? ~Stephen Levine

I like her because she smiles at me and means it. ~Anonymous

Trouble is part of your life, and if you don't share it, you don't give the person who loves you enough chance to love you enough. ~Dinah Shore

I felt it shelter to speak to you. ~Emily Dickinson

-- emergency dog bathing event just now

My earlier post was interrupted by a terrible odor permeating the house. I thought, "Oh my god! What is making that unearthly mephitic smell?"

What else? The dog rolled in feces. Again. 11pm and the emergency bath has commenced. So much for getting to bed early.

Here he is, blowing his coat like half the samoyed he is.

-- high school reunion

This past Saturday I went to a high school reunion. I'd thought for years that I wouldn't bother going but I went anyway. And had a blast! Even the mean people were nice, one of them even came over and apologized:
him: "I'm so sorry I was a jerk to you in 3rd grade!! I just had to tell you. There's a lot of people I need to atone to."

me: "Aw that's so nice! If it makes you feel any better, I don't remember. All I remember is Scott F. in 6th grade screaming something  embarrassing at me down the hall.
I felt humbled knowing all these great people, all so beautiful and kind. I had this sense of all of us moving through life connected by our memories and our youth. There's a kinship in having a shared history and it's comforting.

However the night ended on a nerd note. An old acquaintance I'd spent half the evening talking to kindly drove me to my car (since it was after midnight and my car was half a mile away in a strange place). Once we were outside and I didn't have to scream over the band anymore I suddenly felt shy. I started naming people we'd both known in grade school.
me: "Have you heard from David A.?"

him: "no."

me: "I wonder how he's doing."

him: "me too."

(nearing my car)

me: "oh! Did you hear about Keith P.?"

him: "no, what happened?"

me: "he died. Nite!"
Um, not the best way to break terrible news... d'oh!

-- a song of support for you

I hope you have friends to help you, I hope they know what you go through....

From Ana Free, The Rain.

You won't just cry, I know it's been a long road
And I can't just try, so I wanna take the heavy load
I know you're fine, but the rain is comin' down
You're just like me, don't wanna be around if it ever comes down
Leaves a bitter taste in your mouth and you'll be
wide wide open (yeah yeah)

I hope your mamma never sees you
cryin' like that in
your bedroom
Hope your daddy never finds out,
cuz then you really gotta speak out
I hope you have friends to help you,
I hope they know what you go through
And I hope you find a way out, baby the rain is comin' down
Baby the rain is comin' down
Baby the rain is comin' down
Baby the rain is comin' down

You went all out, and you took her down with you
She treat you right, and she vowed to be with you
I know you're fine but the rain is comin' down
You're just like them, you better run fast cuz you
know it won't last
And God knows just don't ask cuz you'll be wide
Wide open (yeah yeah)

Since so many of you have (privately) cracked up at my expense and asked for a picture, FINE. Here's a visual for you. Actual skirt, actual outfit, actual stance, actual evening, but environment re-enacted (in the safety of my room). If I'm ever senator someday, please just keep this between us, ok?

-- channeling Peter Brady and the tarantula scene from Brady Bunch

Just before dawn I bolted out of bed. There have maybe been 3 times in my life I've done that - slam upright from a deep sleep. I don't remember what caused this before but this time something had lightly touched me under the covers.
Suddenly my subconscious imagined a very hairy and large tarantula making its way along my thigh. My brain, very disturbed by this possibility, yelled "CLEAR!" and administered 1,000 volts deep into my hypothalamus, rudely yanking me out of a very pleasant dream.

I ripped the covers off and, poised like a praying mantis, readied to simultaneously spring across the room and bludgeon the offending intruder into a fine paste, favorite sheets or no. It's amazing how quickly one can go from stage IV sleep to a ninja stance.

But there was no spider. It was Dan twitching in his sleep.

Yeah, I'm a little high strung.
